A Student visa (subclass 500) is an Australian Government decision, separate from university admission. The evidence requested can depend on the applicant and provider, so this page is a planning checklist—not a substitute for the live Home Affairs document checklist or professional immigration advice.
Before the visa stage
- Hold a valid passport with consistent identity details.
- Receive and review the provider’s Letter of Offer.
- Meet the conditions required for acceptance.
- Obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment for the intended course.
- Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover for the required period.
Use the official document checklist
Home Affairs provides a document checklist tool because evidence is not identical for every application. Use it immediately before lodging and keep a copy of the result with your working file.
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- English-language evidence when required
- Financial-capacity evidence when requested
- Health examination information when requested
- Character documents when requested
- Certified translations for documents not in English
Prepare Genuine Student responses with evidence
The Genuine Student requirement asks why study is the primary reason for the visa. Your answers should connect the chosen course to your academic history, circumstances and expected value. Copied statements and invented career claims weaken credibility.
- Explain your current family, community, study and employment circumstances.
- Show why this course and provider were chosen after comparison.
- Explain how the qualification is relevant to your future.
- Address previous study, visa history or course changes truthfully.
- Attach documents that support material claims.
Make financial evidence understandable
If financial evidence is requested, show genuine access to the money and how it accumulated. A balance on one day may not explain the source. Use the live Home Affairs instructions rather than a universal “bank balance” figure from social media.
- Keep bank history and income evidence consistent.
- Explain the relationship to anyone providing support.
- Document the terms and disbursement of an education loan.
- Include tuition, living and travel planning without relying on future work income.
Final accuracy check
- Names, dates and course details match across every document.
- Translations are complete and properly certified where required.
- Answers are written by or fully understood by the student.
- The latest official visa fee, processing information and evidence rules have been checked.
- No flight or accommodation commitment assumes that a visa will be granted.
