There is no single IELTS or PTE score that works for every course and destination. A university may set an admission score, a professional course may add component minimums, and an immigration route may apply a separate evidence rule. Australia: check the course and Student visa separately
Australian providers set course admission requirements. For Student visa applications using a test taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs currently lists IELTS Academic or General Training 6.0 and PTE Academic 47 as standard minimums. Lower visa thresholds may apply with an eligible pathway, foundation programme or specified weeks of ELICOS. These visa thresholds do not replace a provider’s course requirement.
- IELTS 5.5 or PTE 39 may apply with at least 10 weeks of eligible ELICOS, a foundation programme or an eligible pathway programme.
- IELTS 5.0 or PTE 31 may apply with at least 20 weeks of eligible ELICOS.

What changed in Australia on 2 October 2026
The 2 October 2026 Student visa changes did not introduce new IELTS or PTE score thresholds. Official Home Affairs and Study Australia notices describe changes affecting certain onshore applications, further Student visas and family inclusion. A separate temporary transfer restriction also changed from six to twelve months for certain students until 30 June 2027. Treat those changes as application-rule updates, not as English-score changes.
United Kingdom: prove the required CEFR level
The UK Student route normally requires English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and CEFR B1 below degree level. How you prove it depends on your qualification, nationality, sponsor and course. Some applicants use an approved Secure English Language Test. A higher education provider with a track record of compliance can assess English itself for degree-level study, but its admission requirement may be higher than the visa level. Confirm both the offer condition and the visa evidence route before booking a test.
Canada: the institution sets admission English
IRCC’s general study-permit document list does not publish one universal IELTS or PTE admission score for every study permit. The designated learning institution decides which language evidence it accepts for the programme. Immigration officers assess the complete study-permit application, so do not present a college score as a universal federal visa score. Check the exact programme, campus and intake in writing.
